Tips On Caring For Your Valentine's Day Flowers

Here's an interesting article on caring for cut flowers. It should come in handy this Valentine's Day.

Tips On Caring For Your Valentine's Day Flowers
by Gerry Belvedere

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we thought this would be a great time to share a few tips on caring for cut flowers.

Imagine it's Valentine's Day and you've just received a glorious bunch of roses. You put them in your best vase and you stand back to admire them. You'd love to make them last as long as you possibly can, but other than keeping them out of direct sunlight, you're not sure what to do.

Here are some tips on how to extend the shelf life of your roses:

1. Remove the roses from the vase and put them in a temporary container.

2. Clean the vase by washing it thoroughly in water with household bleach.

3. Fill the vase with fresh water and add a half teaspoon of household bleach for each litre (16 fluid ounces) of water.

4. Remove your roses from their temporary container and lay them flat on a counter top.

5. Remove any leaves which will show below the waterline in the vase.

6. Cut about 20 mm (3/4 inch) from the base of each stem immediately before placing it in the vase. This removes any air bubbles.

7. Don't place roses in drafts or direct sunlight, or near fruit, heaters, TVs or refrigerators.

8. Change the water daily to extend the vase life of your roses.

Freshly picked roses can last up to two weeks with a little extra care.

Enjoy!

How Do You Send Flowers???

Hi All,

I just got asked this question by a close friend of mine...

"How do you send flowers?"

"Well it's easy," I said. "First, I have to ask a few questions so I can help you.

- Where do you want to send them?
- When do you want them sent?
- How will you pay for them?
- What prices are you looking at?
- What are the other costs involved?
- Most importantly, what choices do you want with regard to the flowers themselves?"

These are issues that need to be covered when someone orders flowers, especially on the Internet.

There are other issues that have to be covered as well, such as how secure is the site when using your credit card, and do they keep any of your information on their site.

On the Internet, a lot of these questions can be easily answered:

* Location - find a location close to the place where you're sending your flowers. Most of the time, online florists have affiliations with other florists in different countries and areas within a country.

* Time - you can easily add a note as to when you want your flowers sent and what other gifts you would like to include for that special someone.

* Credit Cards - an easy means to pay through the Internet. Just make sure that the site you're ordering from is secure. How do you know a site is secure? Often you can see that the "http" in their URL is followed by an "s" ("https"), which signifies a secure site.

* Most online florists have product images with prices, which makes it easy for a customer to identify the actual look of what they're purchasing.

* If you're ordering from an international site, remember the costs of delivery and possible taxation costs included in your purchase. Hence, it is sometimes inexpensive to order closer to the location where you want your flowers delivered. AND - don't forget to take into account the currency exchange rate of the particular country you're purchasing from.

* This last point I'll leave it up to you. I'm sure your creative eyes will pick the best flowers for your special loved one. Just make sure they're appropriate to the situation and always keep it simple but effective!

I hope this helps you in deciding which flowers you'll send to your loved one.

Cheers,
